SKATER QUESTIONNAIRE

1. How did you hear about Roller Derby?

Google

2. When did you start playing Roller Derby?

February of 2012

3. What was your first practice like?

My first practice was horrifying, I started on a Thursday night it was ten years since I was on skates, and the first derby girl I met was fantastic, she was wearing fishnets tiny shorts and a ripped up tank top, I was hooked. She went by Cybil Disobedience.

4. Why did you start playing Roller Derby?

Well at the time my self esteem was at a all time low, I was lonely, overweight, and had no hobbies, so I googled Female contact sports a couple things came up, kick boxing and I'm not all about being kicked in the face, and roller derby being another.

5. What is the significance behind your Roller Derby Name?

Well I had a few picked out all around Red, My nickname due to my bright Red hair.
-Red Poison Slapple
-Red Ring of Death
-Redrum Doll

6. What is the best part about Roller Derby?

Thats a hard question, I know that no matter how awful my day was when I get to practice it all gets better, I have a group of ladies behind me willing to push me (No pun intended) to be better not only for the team but for myself as well.

7. What is the hardest part?

Dedication. It can be hard to give up free time to practice, I schedule my work around practice nights, I've often thought of quitting because my kids are only this small once, then they ask me when my next bout is and they cheer for me, and I know I make them proud and give them someone to look up to. To prove to them that not all super hero's wear capes.

8. What has Roller Derby taught you?

Roller derby has taught me that even if your personalities clash you can put all that behind you to reach one greater goal together (yes I'm aware how cheesy that sounds)

9.What impact has the sport of roller derby had on your life?

It has had a massive impact on my life, before derby I was pretty much athletically challenged, never needed to be otherwise. I choose art over sports in high school, never thought I could do cool stuff like derby. My attitude is more open, I'm just a better person.

10. Blocker or Jammer?

I can jam or block, but it really depends on the game, and the lineup.
Much better blocker.

11. Pizza or Ice Cream?

Ice cream

12. Favorite Derby Moment/memory?

My first MVP award. That's a awesome feeling knowing that not only did you feel great about the bout the other team thought you did great too.

13. What do you do by day?

By day I am a mother of two girls one is six one is three, and your friendly Wal-Mart associate.

15. Any hobbies outside of derby?

I do all kinds of crafty things, I sew, cook, bead, paint, and draw.

SKATER QUESTIONNAIRE

1. How did you hear about Roller Derby?

One of my good college friends started playing after graduation and she couldn't stop talking about it. Also got handed a flyer about derby via derby girl at a parade in NY, it was pretty cool.

2. When did you start playing Roller Derby?

November 2015 If I remember correctly.

3. What was your first practice like?

Honestly I don't really remember, I just liked the fact that it was a new challenge for me. I like challenges.

4. Why did you start playing Roller Derby?

Honestly I started derby because there wasn't any rowing around here and I needed a team sport. I stayed because of the great camaraderie and the challenge of learning something new.

5. What is the significance behind your Roller Derby Name?

It is no secret I love mermaids, and when I first started I wanted something that I could aspire to be, not how I actually was, so Ariel Wildfire I became. Wildfire represents the opposite of my shy self I wanted to brig out, plus, that whole red head thing.

6. What is the best part about Roller Derby?

Ooh it's hard to pick one. I'd say the best part is not learning a skill but proving you've mastered it enough to use in a bout.

7. What is the hardest part?

Not being as good as I want to be. Also, watching people play when all I want is to be on the floor with them.

8. What has Roller Derby taught you?

Derby has taught me not to be afraid of letting my true self show. Even if that's my 5 year old hyper self.

9.What impact has the sport of roller derby had on your life?

I've made all my friends here and despite the fact that people come and go from derby it doesn't mean they disappear from life. It has made me feel at home in a completely new state.

10. Blocker or Jammer?

I started out as a blocker but secretly always wanted to be a hammer ad this year finally got my chance! Now I am just a cheerleader but still a positive one.

11. Pizza or Ice Cream?

Ice cream all the way.

12. Favorite Derby Moment?

First time getting lead jammer. My favorite part of the game is hearing "5 seconds" right before the first jam. At that moment you never know what to expect and it is anyone's game.

13. What do you do by day?

By day I am a DSM in the pool and spa industry, and I love it.

14. Any hobbies outside of derby?

Many. I love to go out salsa/bachata dancing. I'm a mermaid (but no, really). I love crafting and creating mythical creature accessories as well as seeing. I also love singing and theatre, though it's been awhile. I also used to be a professional sports photographer. I also enjoy training for spartan races and also sitting on my butt watching say yes to the dress while drinking wine.

SKATER QUESTIONNAIRE

1. How did you hear about Roller Derby?

My friend was playing and invited me to watch a bout. I had no idea that it even existed.

2. When did you start playing Roller Derby?

I went to my first bout on 10/19/14 and started coming to practice shortly after that. I certified on 5/4/15

3. What was your first practice like?

Fun! It was a workout, but I loved it. It was a little intimidating because when I started there was no FM coach or any other FM skaters. I got thrown in right away because I knew how to skate.

4. What drew you to the sport?

Oh gosh, so many things! The friendships, the exercise, how badass the sport is in general, and how we come together as a team.

5. What is the significance behind your Roller Derby Name?

I had a whole list of names before I certified, most of them having to do with the color purple/violet. However, one night at practice coach yelled to me "great tenacity Toni!" So Tenacious T was born. Plus, Tenacious D is hilarious, so I don't mind the reference.

6. What is the best part about Roller Derby?

Feeling accepted, accomplished, strong, and all the love!

7. What is the hardest part?

The extra time you have to put in to make the team successful. There's a lot of hard work that goes into running a league, and we're all responsible for its success.

8. What have you learned from the sport?

I've learned that you have to be special to be a roller derby girl. Some people have that fire inside them and some just want to be the image of a derby girl. If you love the sport, you'll find a way to get involved (whether it's Ref'g, NSO'g, volunteering or just being a fan). I've also learned not to underestimate people because they can surprise you.

9.What impact has the sport of roller derby had on your life?

It's definitely made my life more exciting.

10. Blocker or Jammer?

Jammer/pivot

11. Pizza or Ice Cream?

Um, both? If I can't have both, then ice cream.

12. Favorite Derby memory?

It was my first bout, during our intro laps my teammate tripped me and we both fell!

13. What do you do by day?

Human Resources

14. Any hobbies outside of derby?

Being a Mom and Wife

SKATER QUESTIONNAIRE:

2. When did you start playing Roller Derby?
I joined HARD at their fall recruitment night in 2015.

3. What was your first practice like?

The empowering culture.

I just love Harry Potter and believe that Mad Eye is one of the best characters in the series.

6. What is the best part about Roller Derby?

SKATER QUESTIONNAIRE

1. How did you hear about Roller Derby?

My supervisor at an internship was playing with HARD and knew that I had previously played rugby. Knowing that I no longer played rugby she invited me to an open recruitment night and I've been here ever since!

2. When did you start playing Roller Derby?

February 16th,2016

3. What was your first practice like?

Horrible, for me. I put skates on during recruitment night and I fell on my ass as soon as I stood up. I struggled staying up and doing the skills that we were supposed to. However, the vets were so encouraging and kept telling me as long as you can keep getting up you can be a roller girl.

4. Why did you start playing Roller Derby?

I started playing because I was a senior in college and planned on moving to HBG. I had a friend who was already on the team and knew that moving into a new space with a group of kickass derby girls by my side I would never be alone and the move would be easier. p.s. It made the move 100x better

5. What is the significance behind your Roller Derby Name?

My roller derby name is Bismashual. When picking a name I went through some of my favortie aspects about myself and tried to think of something that would be empowering to me. I decided upon a play on words of my sexuality. I identify as bisexual and I know that there is bi-erasure all over. I thought that this was a perfect forum to let people know that this is who am I and who I will always be. My number is 15, because I came out to friends and family in 2015. This is means so much to me and my journey.

6. What is the best part about Roller Derby?

The best part is the bond you create with your teammates and the rest of the derby community.

7. What is the hardest part?

The hardest part is those practices where you just keep messing up. And those practices WILL happen and they'll break your spirits, but then you remember you have amazing teammates who will help you through those rough patches.

8. What has Roller Derby taught you?

At the time when I enjoyed roller derby a LOT was happening in my life. A lot of doors closing and a lot of doors opening. Roller derby helped me understand that I can handle what life throws at me. That you get back up when you get and that when you get up there will be someone there that cares about you to help you work life out.

9.What impact has the sport of roller derby had on your life?

Roller derby has allowed me to love my body and the amazing things it can do. It has given me the confidence to be myself unapologetically.

10. Blocker or Jammer?

Blocker!

11. Pizza or Ice Cream?

PIZZAAAAAAAA

12. Favorite Derby memory?

My favorite memory of derby was during a game. Mad thigh moody and myself hit the jammer out and recycled 2-3 times constantly hitting the jammer out of bounds. This was one of my proudest moments as a blocker.

13. What do you do by day?

Grassroots Organizer for Planned Parenthood

14. Any hobbies outside of derby?

Drinking craft beers at local breweries, game nights, and dancing!!!

3. What was your first practice like?

Extremely exhausting. I thought I was going to die.

The culture and the acceptance of people from every walk of life. I also feel like Derby has this sort of out-of-the-mainstream punk vibe to it, which I love.

SKATER QUESTIONNAIRE

1. How did you hear about roller derby? It was on TV when I was a kid in the 80’s, but obviously it’s a much different game now. I have a friend from jr high who’s been skating while living in another country so that brought my attention to the game still being played and then Facebook happened: a HARD recruitment night post showed up in my newsfeed.

2. When did you start playing roller derby? About 7 months ago.

3.What was your first practice like? A little scary. I didn’t know anyone there and that was ok; all the ladies were really nice. I had mainly ice skated before that night, so I skated so awkwardly (and probably still do!).

4.What drew you to the sport / why did you start playing roller derby? I had played sports my entire childhood and teenage years and had genuinely missed it.

5.What is the significance behind your roller derby name? Well I’m a child of the 80’s, so obviously Rocky Balboa was an inspirational film character for me. Also, this Rocky quote really fits how I think: “It ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth.”

6.What is the best part about roller derby? The fitness that accompanies attending practice and the camaraderie that comes with it. This game is overflowing with amazing and inspiring women.

7.What is the hardest part? Getting past the fear of being hurt. My job is very physical, so I need to be in good health and in one piece to do it.

8.What has roller derby taught you? It’s helped to remind me that I’m only limited by my mind and skillset… and my skills can be bettered through hard work, practice, and asking vets/coaches for help.

9.What impact has the sport of roller derby had on your life? I’ve found a whole new collection of women to respect and admire through it. I’ve also gained some ridiculous bruises.

10.Blocker or Jammer? Blocker. I don’t aspire to be a full time jammer, but I might want to Pivot when I learn how to better switch between offense and defense.

11.Favorite derby moment/memory? So far? I guess my first bout review (where we watch our match from the previous day together as a team). It was truly humbling and I also learned so much watching myself play.

12.Any hobbies outside of derby? I really enjoy watching films, reading books of all kinds, playing video/board games, and finding new music to listen to live or sing badly while in my car. I take aerial silks/trapeze classes and try to keep myself fit by doing weight training, pilates, and yoga. Travel is a big part of my life and thanks to DuoLingo, I’m currently learning multiple languages. I love to learn, observe people and culture, and I truly try to live gently. I also enjoy volunteering at a local no-cage/no-kill animal shelter.
